Green America approved business

Green America (formerly known as Co-Op America) is a not-for-profit membership organization founded in 1982. Their mission is to harness economic power—the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace—to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.
To qualify to appear in the National Green Pages and carry the Seal of Approval, companies must demonstrate that they:
* Actively use their businesses as tools for positive social change;
* Run "values-driven" enterprises that operate according to principles of social justice and environmental sustainability;
* Are socially and environmentally responsible in the way they source, manufacture, and market their products and run their offices and factories; and
* Are committed to developing and employing extraordinary practices that benefit workers, customers, communities, and the environment.

1% for the planet member

1% FOR THE PLANET was started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder and CEO of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies. 1% for the Planet is a growing global movement of over 1,400 member companies in 38 countries that donate 1% of their sales to environmental organizations worldwide.

Native Energy carbon credits

NativeEnergy leverages market demand for high quality, additional carbon offsets to bring online new Native American, family farmer and community-owned renewable energy and carbon-reduction projects that provide both environmental and social benefits. NativeEnergy enables its clients to help directly finance the construction of specific new projects. NativeEnergy also offers third party verified and certified offsets and RECs. Our expertise engages both short term and long term solutions within an organization including: evaluating the environmental footprint of a firm, reducing energy use and costs, and engaging employees on carbon reductions within the company and at home.
MotherTongues off sets our electricity use for our home office and remote web site server, as well as for the shipping of our t-shirts, through the purchase of renewable energy credits.

Fair Trade Certified t-shirts

Fair Trade certification for Apparel and Linen is done by Fair Trade USA. This new program is the first social, economic and environmental standard that directly benefits the farmers who grow the cotton and the workers who sew the garments. It offers companies and consumers an unprecedented opportunity to positively impact the lives of these farmers and workers.
MotherTongues is committed to Fair Trade. Two of our three suppliers are producing Fair Trade Certified products, and we hope to switch over time to have all MotherTongues products Fair Trade Certified. Please see the FAQ to find out which MotherTongues products are now Fair Trade Certified.
